As there is an ecological gradient from north to south in the Western Ghats with changes in diversity and species richness as well as physical features, a normalization for every state was done for these parameters. Thus, scores were normalized for each state. For instance, the highest recorded altitude in a given grid in a state was given the maximal score and all other grids in that state were ranked in relative fashion.
